Find a role for everyone

16:00Lena Hi Team Comets! Sports day is on Thursday morning. There is a role for everyone, not just the fastest runners. I like running, so I want the first part of the relay. Who wants to join our team? 0:17
16:02Hugo I'd like to run the second part. I can run quite fast, but passing the baton is difficult for me. Could we practise that together? I don't want to drop it when Lena gives it to me. 0:14
16:04Zoe I can help at the target station. I use a wheelchair, and I enjoy throwing beanbags into hoops. We can move the hoops closer or farther away so everyone can choose a challenge. I can explain the choices to visitors. 0:18
16:06Max I'm not keen on races, but I want to help. I can write the scores and check that each team gets a turn. Our teacher has a clipboard for me. Can I also make our team sign? 0:14

The sports-day timetable

17:00Lena Here is Thursday's timetable. Meet on the playground at nine o'clock. The relay starts at half past nine on the running track. Each runner waits beside a cone until the teacher blows the whistle. Bring trainers and a water bottle. 0:18
17:02Hugo After the relay, the target station opens at quarter past ten on the grass beside the oak tree. Teams have six beanbags each. You get one point for every bag that lands inside a hoop, not beside it. 0:17
17:04Zoe Our lunch break starts at twelve. There is a picnic area next to the playground, with tables and a wide path. Please keep that path clear so everyone can get to the tables. Bring your own packed lunch. 0:17
17:06Max There are no gold medals today. Every team gets a certificate for working together. The certificates are handed out at half past one in the playground. Parents can watch from behind the white line by the fence. 0:16

The target station moves

4 Audios · Dauer 1:09 · Gruppe „Team Comets“

08:00Lena There is a change for the target station this morning. Rain made the grass by the oak tree very soft. Wheels and shoes sink into it, so it isn't a good place for everyone to play. We need firm ground. 0:18
08:02Hugo Could we use the narrow path by the fence? No, people need that path to walk past safely. Putting hoops there would block it. Let's keep the path open and ask the teacher about the hard court instead. 0:17
08:04Zoe The teacher says yes to the hard court beside the gym. It has a level surface and a wide gate. The target station moves there from the grass. It still starts at quarter past ten, with six beanbags per team. 0:18
08:06Max I'll draw a clear arrow on our sign and put it at the oak tree. The relay is still on the running track at half past nine. The picnic and certificate times don't change either. Let's tell the other teams calmly. 0:17

What makes a good team?

4 Audios · Dauer 1:06 · Gruppe „Team Comets“

15:00Lena The relay went well! Hugo and I practised passing the baton before the race. We didn't come first, but we passed it without dropping it. That mattered more to me than being the fastest team on the track. 0:16
15:02Hugo I was nervous when I heard the whistle. Then Lena called my name, and I knew when to start moving. I felt proud when I caught the baton. Next time I want to help another runner practise too. 0:17
15:04Zoe The hard court worked well for our station. One pupil chose the nearest hoop and another chose the farthest. They both cheered when a beanbag landed inside. Choosing a distance helped them enjoy the same game together. 0:16
15:06Max I liked keeping the scores. When two teams had the same number, we checked the sheet together instead of arguing. Our certificate is on the classroom noticeboard now. Everyone helped today, even people who didn't run in a race. 0:17

Lena Hi Team Comets! On Monday we are taking a team photo at quarter past eleven in the gym, not on the playground, because rain is expected. Bring our certificate and wear your red team badge. Please leave the beanbags in the sports cupboard; we don't need them for the photo. 0:22
