Whose present are we preserving?

4 Audios · Dauer 1:01 · Gruppe „The Community Time Capsule“

Transkript Teil 1
UhrPersonTextDauer
16:00Hazel The community centre has invited our group to prepare a time capsule, to preserve something about life today. We cannot include everyone’s experience, so our introduction must explain how we selected the contributions and whose voices may still be missing. 0:17
16:02Amir I suggest a bus ticket and a short note about a familiar journey. An ordinary object can reveal everyday life, but only if its caption explains what it meant to the person who chose it. 0:14
16:04Poppy I can invite written memories from visitors. People may choose a fictional example instead of a personal story. Sharing a memory should be an invitation, not a test of how much someone belongs here. 0:14
16:06Miles I will check the dates attached to objects. A memory tells us what someone recalls; it is not automatically proof of the exact date. We should keep the person’s words distinct from our factual notes. 0:16

A manageable collection

Transkript Teil 2

17:00Hazel The capsule will hold ten contributions. Bring proposals to the centre on Saturday at eleven. Each caption may use up to forty words and should state who selected the item, using a first name or an agreed label. 0:15
17:02Amir My ticket is from a journey in April. The printed date is clear, but I will cover the identifying number before including a copy. The caption explains why that journey mattered to the contributor. 0:14
17:04Poppy One visitor remembers the old hall opening in June, while a dated programme says July. I will keep the memory as a recollection and put the programme’s date in a separate note. 0:13
17:06Miles We will ask contributors whether they agree to their text going into the capsule and its catalogue. Someone may agree to one use and decline the other. We should record those choices separately. 0:14

A different storage plan

4 Audios · Dauer 0:59 · Gruppe „The Community Time Capsule“

Transkript Teil 3
UhrPersonTextDauer
18:00Hazel The centre cannot safely install the capsule under the courtyard paving as planned. Maintenance access is needed there. We must choose a new storage place rather than interfere with that access. 0:16
18:02Amir Could we leave it on an outdoor bench instead? That would be easy to find, but it would not protect the contents. The centre has offered a locked indoor display cabinet. 0:13
18:04Poppy Let us use the indoor cabinet instead of burying the capsule. The ten contributions and Saturday’s eleven o’clock deadline stay unchanged. We will explain the storage decision in the catalogue, not silently pretend the original plan happened. 0:16
18:06Miles I will update only the storage description. The capsule is still meant for future readers. A clear record of what we actually did is more useful than an impressive story about what we intended. 0:14

Teil 4 · Chat

A small collection with honest limits

4 Audios · Dauer 0:58 · Gruppe „The Community Time Capsule“

Transkript Teil 4
UhrPersonTextDauer
19:00Amir The bus ticket looked unimportant beside a decorated object, but its caption started a conversation about daily travel. I was relieved that we judged contributions by their meaning, rather than by how expensive they looked. 0:14
19:02Poppy A visitor chose not to include her personal memory. We used her fictional example with her agreement and labelled it clearly. Keeping that choice mattered more than collecting a dramatic story. 0:14
19:04Miles I kept June as the visitor’s recollection and July as the programme’s documented date. That makes the difference visible. Removing one version would hide how we checked the information and what remained uncertain. 0:15
19:06Hazel Our ten items are not a complete portrait of the community. Next time, we should invite people who did not visit this afternoon. A limited collection can still be valuable if we explain its limits honestly. 0:15

Hazel Hello, capsule team! The catalogue review is on Tuesday at half past four in the centre’s meeting room. Bring copies of the captions, not the original objects. Mark any date you still need to check. Send revised captions by Thursday, with a limit of thirty words each. 0:19
