Start with a problem

16:00Cleo For our design project, we are pitching a school homework app. We should start with a problem users describe, rather than add every impressive feature we can imagine. A pitch needs a reason for each choice. 0:15
16:02Arun Three classmates told me they miss deadlines because information is scattered across different pages. That suggests a useful problem to explore. It does not prove that every pupil wants a new app. 0:13
16:04Jade I would test a simple deadline list first. We can use invented assignments and names in the prototype. We do not need real pupil information to find out whether the screen is understandable. 0:14
16:06Blake I can check the wording of our pitch. I helped with a design club in the United States. We learned that saying an app is for everyone is easy; showing who tested it is more useful. 0:15

A focused first version

17:00Cleo Our first prototype has three features: a deadline list, a subject filter and an optional reminder. The test is on Wednesday at four in room six. We will use five invented assignments. 0:16
17:02Arun The reminder is off by default. Users can choose one reminder for a deadline, rather than receive repeated alerts. We want to help people remember, not keep pulling them back onto the screen. 0:14
17:04Jade The subject filter changes what the list shows. It does not delete assignments from other subjects. I will include a clear Show all button so users can see the full list again. 0:13
17:06Blake Four volunteers will try finding tomorrow’s tasks without our help. We will record which steps confuse them, not collect their real homework or compare their marks. The test is about the design. 0:16

18:00Cleo The school tablets are unavailable for Wednesday’s test. Our interactive prototype cannot be used in the room. We need another way to test the navigation without pretending it is a finished app. 0:13
18:02Arun Could we just describe the screens in a speech? That would mainly test our explanation. Paper screen cards would let volunteers choose where to tap, even though the cards cannot run software. 0:13
18:04Jade Let us use paper cards instead of the tablet prototype. I will swap the cards when a volunteer points to a button. Wednesday at four, the room and the five invented assignments stay the same. 0:15
18:06Blake I will state clearly that it is a paper navigation test. We can observe whether buttons make sense, but we cannot use it to claim the app loads quickly or works on every device. 0:14

Evidence for a careful pitch

Transkript Teil 4

19:00Jade Two volunteers confused the subject filter with a delete button. I changed its label and added Show all below it. The problem was in our design, not a reason to call the testers careless. 0:14
19:02Arun One volunteer wanted repeated alerts, but another found even one reminder distracting. We kept reminders optional. This trade-off helps people remember without forcing repeated alerts on everyone. More attention is not automatically a better result. 0:16
19:04Blake Our pitch now says the paper test revealed a confusing label. It does not say that four volunteers proved the app would improve everyone’s grades. We have evidence about navigation, not learning outcomes. 0:14
19:06Cleo I am pleased that we removed an exaggerated claim. The design still has potential, and being clear about what remains untested makes the pitch more credible. Our next step is a working prototype with another small test. 0:16

Cleo Hello, design team! Our next test is on Friday at half past two in room two. Bring the working prototype and keep the five invented assignments. Invite six volunteers this time, not four. We will test navigation again; we still cannot claim an effect on grades. 0:21
